Bus Pirate 5XL & Bus Pirate 6 testing update:
We had really awful yield on the first batch. We ran 25 panels (100 pieces) of each. 30% of BP6 and 20% of BP5XL failed factory testing. It was like the corner case with the RP2040 with the XOSC* startup delay issue: LEDs and LCD ok, but USB doesn’t connect.
However, when they arrived at the office we tested them again and all passed. There was some weirdness with the factory testing computer and the terminal COM port was swapping randomly with the binary COM port.
* So I learned that Rpi specifies a very specific crystal for the RP chips. I did not know this until the beta program. Bus Pirate 5 uses a cheap crystal from a reliable manufacturer. Evidently it should be an abracon part that is pretty much only used by RP chips. 5XL and 6 use the specified part, which is 10x more expensive
It depends on how eager you are There very well could be updates, we pulled it together in 6 weeks so
On the other hand, the tough stuff is the analog bits and that is the same a 5.
I have no idea what the chip supply is going to be like going forward, I don’t even know the cost at this point. I have a small reel of each chip given to us by Rpi and that will be the end of it for now.
It does come with our usual “we’ll do our best to look after everyone” guarantee. If serious issues arise and you can’t do the board surgery yourself, we’ll send a replacement when/if available.
