REV10 batch 1 errors, fixes, replacements

@AreYouLoco shared a video from a hackerspace repairing the PFET on one of the early batch one boards.

The repeated application of flux is key, and it’s nice to see them use it so liberally. I also like the bonus resistor array cleanup and the UV cured epoxy over the wire.

If you’re just receiving your Bus Pirate, it has the corrected PCB files. No need for these mad skills. These boards were mailed out two months ago, before spring festival.

What

@AreYouLoco - what are you using to clean the board?

Yours is the latest version if you only got it yesterday. Ones that need fixes are the ones shipped before February 2024.

It was not me doing the work. But cleaner was simply IPA and poliester tissues.

Just to confirm that Rev10a is free from the 2 issues above?

Yes. Only the very first batch Rev10 boards had the two hardware problems.

Hello all. I ordered mine from a French distributor Lab401 recently. Just to be on the safe side I would like to know if the faulty batch items were removed from their stockpile too.

Lab401 has the most recent hardware. Only ~100 boards shipped with the error, and we scrapped the rest.

I cringe at the thought of scrapping that many. I can think of so many different projects to use them for.

I still have the hope of having a part custom die-bonded with the incorrect footprint and reworking them. CBI really doesn’t want to do it though, but I’m still looking.

Hello,
I’ve tried raising a ticket on dirtypcbs for replacement but had no response. I am fairly confident that I’m not able to do the repair myself .

Hi @3663!

I’m sorry you didn’t get a reply. The email attached to the forum doesn’t bring up your order. Would you please private message me your email or order number and we’ll send out a replacement.

Finally got around to trying to use my PB5 for something and it looks like I got a batch 1 board. I hadn’t seen this post, so the first sign I got that anything was wrong was a “Backflow prevention activated” error when trying to enable the power supply after updating the firmware. The self-test was also failing after the firmware update.

Soldering a piece of TH resistor leg in the suggested location seems to have sorted it out, and the self-test now passes on the latest firmware.

Hey, thanks for the update. Just send me your order number privately if you still need a replacement.

Hi Ian!

I didn’t even tried, my eyes and hands can’t do that anymore.

How do I send back mine and get a replacement? Sorry for not being able to do that.

Thanks for the awesome product!.

No need to send it back, just open a support ticket on your order and we’ll send a new one.
