This is already a beast!

@ian … with side-facing pixels or no? Doesn’t show in above render…

When it’s routed we’ll do a few variants to compare.

OK. One benefit I’m expecting is the ability to have much smoother blending animations. Currently, if only using side-emitting, the pixels are too spaced apart. Similarly, if using all pixels, the brightness cannot be normalized, because the viewing angle changes the relative brightness.

Also, please strongly consider using SK6805 (e.g., SK 6805 SIDE-G) … this will drop the max current draw to 1/3 of the SK6812. Since the firmware today is already limiting this to 1/3 brightness (by integer division … thus limiting to effectively ~80 levels of brightness per LED), switching to SK6805 (and updating the firmware to remove that 1/3 maximum) would give much more color fidelity and smoother transitions … opening up the full 256 levels of brightness for each color component.

7R2 with VOUT protection is complete.

  • We are checking on SK6805s with our LED supplier
  • A second variant is being routed with all SIDE-A LEDs.

ETA:

SK6805-sida-a and SK6805-mini-e are available from our supplier. They are a premium part and cost more than double the 12ma part. Let’s give them a try on the next round of prototypes.

Board is finished. Making 2 version, here is the variant with all SIDE-A LEDs.
