FIX YOUR SIX (Bus Pirate 5XL/6 resistor fix)

Yet another way to tackle the problem  Nice!

Oh man. Now I gotta scrounge my parts drawers for one of these arrays. I need that sticker!

My tweezers are a Hakko model, they’re fine for anything I’d want to solder. But I can’t imagine they’d do very well with an 0402.

I continue to be tempted by one of those USB PD powered portable irons. Especially on a couple of recent projects where traveling to a clients site was quite a headache carrying a “real” iron and accoutrements

This is the FIX YOUR SIX sticker proof, the green outline is the laser cut/shape. Size is about 5x5cm.

We need 100 max. Factory wants to do 1000 for 120RMB. They’re willing to do 500, but the discount is only 5RMB and they highly recommend we do 1000 for a better value

With seemingly no way to convince them that in this specific instance more stickers is in fact not better, we acquiesced and got 1000 :space_invader: This was not a battle I could win.

lol…. How many of those arrays did you buy?

Usually you have to buy 50 or 100.

Digikey allowed me to add two (2x) to my cart (Panasonic brand). That said, after seeing the shipping cost, I increased to fifty (50x)… and the shipping was still more than 3x the cost because they can’t conceive of just putting some in an envelope and sending via USPS.

Yeah. I’m facing the same issue here. I e asked one of my clients if I can steal four resistors from their spare inventory instead.

I think bought 50. I’m used to buying at the price-break point for projects, although this one was a matter of a couple cents to ensure if I flung one across the room, I wouldn’t have to wait on a second order to arrive. I put a single piece in my cart just to see if it would take it, and it did, but I wouldn’t want to order a single piece. I will just add the spares to the components in inventory. If I ever need one again, I don’t have to wait on shipping. I just need to get around to finding an open source electronics inventory system so I actually know what I have without trying to remember where it is.

“I think bought 50.”

Yea…. So did I. For all the reasons you highlighted.

If you are in the US and PM me your info, I’ll stick a stamp on an envelope and send you a dozen when I get mine. Might take an extra week to get to you, but …

Thanks man. Looks like I got a handful of 0402 5.1K resistors on the way. Although I kind of wish I needed you to give me some, just so I could brag that I received the gift of gab.

I knew there were some overlaps between the imperial and metric EIA chip sizes, but I never realized there were two sizes that overlapped to each other! 1005 = 0402 and
0402 = 01005.

A 0402 metric must be like a speck of pepper.

I’d love a couple from someone (I live in the New York area).

DM me your address if someone hasn’t already got you covered. I saw Jin offering to throw some in with loaner orders I believe. Either way, I have extra and an envelope.

Envelope signed sealed and pending delivery. I didn’t count, but I threw in some extras incase you sneeze while soldering one.

I Fixed My Six!

Took a bit longer than I wanted. I used Caption tape to help keep the temps down on neighboring components and a hot air station with a soldering iron to help get the components off, used lead based solder to help clean up the pads with wire braid, and finally used solder paste dot method with the hot air to put the new ones in. Sprinkled on a little cleanup with wire braid and then some IPA. Here are the pics:

Nice work! And the screen is still OK?

Works like a champ. I saw your highlight about that so I kept the hot air to 400 and used high flow rate for the removal. I also used some extra leaded solder and wire braid to remove as much as I could before I hit it with the hot air.
