Have you seen this ESP32 port of Bus Pirate?

The wireless features add a twist.

Has anyone ever thought of a BLE/WiFi plank?

Someone has started a discussion on whether it’s OK to use the name ESP32-Bus Pirate. What is your take on this? @ian

As soon as that project came out with that name, I thought… just wait, someone’s definitely going to open an issue on the forum about a problem with that thing

Look like they’re creating a BP5 compatible header too. Good news for BP accessory sales?

I wouldn’t want to lug a BP5 around to poke at just the airwaves, a tiny portable device can do.

Very cool! Though if they’re progressing to hardware we really need to discuss the use of Bus Pirate as a name. It’s a bit infringy. ESP Pirate is right there for the taking.

I personally disclaim any rights to a project using the following (e.g., as between myself and them, they have permission):

  • ESPirate
  • ESPirate32
  • ESP(irate)32

I kinda like the third one. Hope they reach out to Ian.

yeah, the name was too close from the beginning. should contact him before real board revisions are made

Wonderfully put! They really do need to change their entire naming schema.

Where was the name Bus Pirate registered?

I think the real problem is that no one wants to spend more than $80 on a product that isn’t worth it, so by spending only $6 you can use firmware that does more than the classic Bus Pirate.
The buffer isn’t mandatory; the ESP32 Bus Pirate can interface with 3.3V devices (90% of devices) directly without the need for a buffer.
I understand this is ruining your business, but honestly, I would never, ever buy a Bus Pirate 5/6.
I had a Bus Pirate 3.6, and when I saw the price of the 5 or 6, I thought, “I’m looking for an alternative,” so I searched for “esp32 bus pirate” and found that amazing project on GitHub.
The name is perfect because it’s what I was looking for.

well at least they didn’t make a rat version or the real dreg would have an issue

This is a joke? xD That’s a project that came out 15 years after a hardware project that’s already obsolete, with chips and stuff that are already dead. (Just a retro-fan project).

In case it wasn’t clear @rce_pirate

I genuinely want buspirate.com project to receive as much financial support as possible so it remains viable and continues to grow.

That is why I always recommend people buy from the official source whenever possible. Anything I can do to help with that, I try to do. I also try to contribute both financially and technically to buspirate.com, the ecosystem, and the users whenever I can, even though my skills are crap compared to many people here.

I am a big fan of buspirate.com and of @Ian ’s work in general. On my website, I also recommend that everyone buy the modern Bus Pirate.

I believe I am doing the right thing: using a different name for a retro-fan-project, giving clear credit to the original project, and helping wherever I can.

I also try to keep the firmware and everything compatible, and support everyone who has legacy Bus Pirate hardware so they don’t end up with a paperweight at home.

What makes you think a copyright requires registration?

Actually, you probably meant trademark…

What makes you think a trademark requires registration?

Thank you so much for your feedback. You are absolutely right, a straight 3.3v interface is great for 99% of hacking! I love open and cheap debugging tools, the more the better. I’m glad you found something that works for you! You can even run the Bus Pirate firmware on a $1 PICO board with similar effect

I feel obligated to clarify a few points because you seem to have come in really hot for a first time poster.

Bus Pirate v3.x has been available for $30 since 2009. The price never increased on our side, though distributors may vary.

Bus Pirate 5, which is infinitely more complex with injection molding and such, is ~$40. That’s a $10 increase after 15 years. Inflation adjusted I would bet that 5 in 2026 $ is cheaper than the v3.x in 2010 $.

BP 6 is there for people who want to support the project and get a few extras, which you clearly don’t and that’s 100% fine!

I don’t get why you feel this is a zero sum game and competition is “ruining my business”.

First, I have been pretty silent on the matter because it is best left to legal professionals. There are Bus Pirate users and open source enthusiasts who have urged the project to change its name. They feel the project is trading on a trademarked name because it has value, such as bringing in search results like yours. Arduino would come after any project calling itself “ESP32 Arduino”, which is why you get “ESP32uino” and similar mash-ups.

Second, there have been tons of similar debug tools developed over the years. Some are still super active and beloved. Each project has it’s own strengths, community, personality, quality of docs and demos, attention to major bug reports, etc. We’re not in competition, it’s part of a larger ecosystem.

Third, the Bus Pirate hardware isn’t a “business”. It is the output of a web of manufacturing resources that we also provide to other businesses/users. It is a demonstration of our supply chain capabilities and agility.

Finally, yes, Where Labs has claimed “Bus Pirate” as a trademark since 2009. As I’m sure you know, as the trademark holder I am obligated to defend the mark whether I like it or not, and I am leaving that to professionals.

Very well stated, Ian. I suspect this hit is the direct result of your legal team’s actions. I’m also certain that they expected you to react as the immature child that they have shown themselves to be. Surprise!
