SLE4442 Broken on Bus Pirate 6 Firmware Main 2026-05-27

Just got the Bus Pirate 6 and updated to the most current firmware for it and have the KF-011C adapter but it looks like the SLE4442 module is broken on it since it doesn’t work with ‘init’ or ‘dump’ commands and ‘sniff’ keeps throwing 0xFF output none-stop.

There’s also some strangeness going on when the 2WIRE mode is active and the IO pins are all connected by wires and taps through a pass-through adapter with a SmartCard SLE4442 in it, but extra bytes are produced when the AlcorLink AU9450 USB SmartCard reader does the ATR for init and when it tries to read any memory data it always outputs 0xFF.

When BP6 is put back into HiZ mode that all stops and the USB reader is able to get the data correctly but I can’t seem to figure out how to capture the communications correctly since FALA produces nothing and the ‘logic’ command doesn’t show any data being captured. Might just be me not configuring the logic captures correctly though.

There are already threads about this mentioning that the Bus Pirate 6 has PIO problems and something about an E9 bug on the RP2350 chip but they are from 2024 and it’s 2026 now without any fixes.

https://forum.buspirate.com/t/2wire-sniffer-for-sle4442-ic-cards-and-tm1640-led-driver/1077

This thread also mentions that the Bus Pirate 5 REV10 seems to work correctly so I would guess that the firmware for BP6 has errors in it due to the pin changes on the BP6 RP2350 from the BP5 RP2040 chip.

Any chance of getting this fixed anytime soon? Otherwise I might have to order the older BP5REV10 to continue working on my project.

The sniffer output is in MSB (Most Significant Bit) first l format even though LSB (Least Significant Bit) first L command was used in the 2WIRE mode. This should be updated in the firmware to respect the L bit order set before sniff command.

So the sniffer is just dumping 0xFF as ones non-stop with some data in it when I use the USB SmartCard reader and the AlcorLink AU9450 Demo software to send the Intialize (ATR) button and the Read Main Memory button or Read Protection Memory or Read Security Memory buttons. I can change the 2WIRE speeds from 20KHz to 50KHz to 1,000KHz but the results are the same.

If I let the USB SmartCard reader drive the voltage and not enable the power supply on the BP6 then the sniff command doesn’t dump 0xFF non-stop but the results of the commands of reading the memory always end up as 0xFF after the first few bytes that are actually read correctly. Not even the second 16-bytes of the cards hard-coded data is read, just the first few bytes.

The moment that I leave 2WIRE mode back to HiZ all the reader commands start working correctly on the demo software even with all of the taps and leads still connected.

Any help with this BP6 would be appreciated.

I will test this and if there’s an bug I’ll push a fix asap. Will be a few days as I’m flying at the moment.

My suspicion is it’s all the stuff connected, and I’m not fully sure the sniffer can handle the ATR. It’s for devices that use a “pure” 2 Wire mode.

It’s definitely not E 9, that was a problem with the PI chip. We pushed a fix and replaced all effected hardware.

The sniffer output is in MSB (Most Significant Bit) first l format even though LSB (Least Significant Bit) first L command was used in the 2WIRE mode. This should be updated in the firmware to respect the L bit order set before sniff command.
