Vout > on-board power supply

I’m trying to use a bus pirate 5 I bought a while back as a SPI flash programmer. I seem to be failing at the first hurdle because when I turn on Vout I’m told that I have an external voltage connected

SPI> W 3.3
3.30V requested, closest value: 3.30V
Current limit:Disabled

Power supply:Enabled

Error: Vout > on-board power supply. Backflow prevention activated
Is an external voltage connected to Vout/Vref pin?

I saw the post about the batch 1 issues REV10 batch 1 errors, fixes, replacements I’m not sure if I have one of those or not and I’m not sure if that impacts using Vout

I have one of the early rev10 boards. I made one of the two suggested mods.

Please take no offense, but just to make sure - when you enter SPI mode, what does the display show on the SPI pins? They should all be zero.

They all say 0 (at this point there’s nothing connected to any of the pins).

The silkscreen on the PCB says Nov 2023 which I guess could be one of the early batches. There’s no obvious rework on the board.

I have no idea if the serial numbers are ascending in order. FWIW, the serial number of mine (Bus Pirate 5 Preview Version, assembled PCB only, ordered Oct 25, 2023, for $27.85) is 32104F0B33CC62E4

Do you have a record when you ordered your BP? The introductory price of the was purposely kept low.

Going on my old emails. It was shipped on 22nd Jan 2024

Hey @cpackham!

I think it is highly likely that is from the first batch and needs a hardware fix. There’s some examples around of how to fix it.

The only absolutely necessary step is to short two pins on U506 (?), which is pretty do-able for a short term fix.

Please open a support ticket and we will send a replacement. China just started the National holiday though, so you probably won’t get a reply until next week.

Great thanks for that. I’ve clicked the support link on the order page on dirtypcbs.com

I’ll attempt the U506 rework on the board I have.

Thanks so much for understanding! Let us know how the fix turns out. Well get you a replacement asap.

I managed to get the rework done. Seems to have got me past the Vout issue I was having. Now I can play with a few different SPI-NOR chips.
